The Founders — An innovative Vision

Jonathan and Dawn Roberts founded Bright Horizon Preparatory School in the summer of 2007. In October 2006, prior to the opening of the Preparatory School, Jonathan and Dawn developed an after school tutoring program as well as an adult education program.

The School motto, “Make the sky your limit,” was developed by Jonathan who, based on his own educational and life experiences, wanted students to realize that they could achieve their goals if they were willing to work hard. Jonathan had been a high school dropout at age 17, but returned and finished school after having to repeat his junior year. He then enlisted in the United States Army Special Forces, where he served for 20 years in Germany and the United States.

Jonathan began his college education in his forties, enrolling in a local two-year college in 1993. In 1995, he transferred to the University of Pennsylvania, an Ivy League institution in Philadelphia, PA, and graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science/international politics. He then attended Georgetown University’s prestigious School of Foreign Service in Washington, DC, graduating in 1997 with numerous honors and a Master of Science in Foreign Service degree. Only upon completion of graduate school did Jonathan discover that he had Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

Dawn has worked at various schools in St. Lucia and the US over the last 21 years, ranging from St. Mary’s College in St. Lucia, where she taught for eight years, to American institutions like The Academy of the Holy Cross, a college preparatory school, to Kingsbury Day School in Washington, DC, a school established to meet the needs of learning-disabled children. She is presently pursuing her studies in clinical psychology with a goal of earning a Doctor of Psychology (Psy.D) degree.

For Dawn, it was her experience teaching at Saddlebrook Resort Preparatory School in Florida that created the greatest impact on her teaching career. It started her thinking about children in her own country and the impact such a school would have on the lives of young students in St. Lucia and the OECS countries.

The School

The School is located in an eight-room stand-alone building complex on a one-acre site with large open areas for recreational activities. The building is air-conditioned and the grounds are fully fenced and have security lighting/systems. The School is well equipped with the latest information technology, including full wireless connectivity, so we permit students to bring their laptops with them. There is also a science lab and a School cafeteria where nutritious meals are prepared. The School administrative office is housed in a separate building on the school grounds. It is easily accessible and has ample parking.

Bus transportation from home to school and back is available to our students.

Special curriculum

Our school curriculum caters to children across the whole spectrum of learning needs, including academically gifted children, “late developers”, and children with learning disabilities. Among the special features unique to the BHPS approach to education are:

  • Emphasis on life-skills, e.g. personal hygiene, shopping, budgeting, and money management
  • Emphasis on community service, civic responsibility, and fostering the spirit of volunteerism
  • Reliance on continuous assessment instead of emphasis on examinations
  • Fully equipped computer lab including 15 PCs providing an information technology program preparing students for the participation in the electronic world
  • Small class sizes
  • Encouraging a holistic approach to learning by including sports such as golf, swimming, tennis, cricket, soccer, sailing, and squash in the school curriculum
